NO TOWN DISTRICT.

[prom our own correspondent.] -..rOa^aturdayJastr.JSQ To.wn Qreekyiand ita, nuqierona raogefafflabnts were is' Very high flood. I regret to say that considers able damage haa been done, botfi'ln this and the Red Jack's district, to VaU'raoes, &c, and I am told the Tannel Claim Ex. tended atilriahtoWn, and which, Iraelnow under creek level, are completely fiooded. The floo4 at its height threatened .the io^nshie; aj: liiid-da^ and itiironll'be adjyiaabfe'thatthe County lajr 6vs a couple of hotea in clearing put the creek, chanael above the township, a nnmber of old trees stumps, &c, haying fixed .themaelves In this particular locality. Stable Island; Tbtf firunner Parade; was seen to muc&ady^ntage on Saturday, and a weH-kndwii dhtig heap receptacle got a thorpugn' good washing. Not being a municipality just yet, and being without any magisterial authority, the fine fresh New Zealand air will hereabouts still continue slightly perfumed, and on some sultry days might I be safely bottled or carried away in wipes. . t .. \ ,f . Proipeotiiig Association meetinir. called for Saturday evening, baj b«m poitpon»d» I unttafeod, till ail the ImS

trabfloriptions are paid In. No applicants have applied as yet. The Association, has now allowed the weather to break upon It, and probably for a long season, during which time all miners will have to do their own prospecting as best they can. In some eyes this don't much matter, as, had there been' no stir recently for a new County, there would have been much less stir, and "all of a heap" about the carrying on of an aided prospecting business. Miners as a role, are not ■ now-a-days bo shallow as some folks imagine, and a majority of them know full well, and duly appreciate for what it is worth, the recent mighty efforts to resucitate an association for the good of their industry, which was started with blare of trumpet, and other : high and false fahrtin jast twenty months ago. In the present truly melancholy state of County indebtedness, and with a t portentous thundercloud all over what what might have been an unclouded CouDty Bky, it may, and with reason, be asked what guarantee can now be given that even a paltry LSO will at once be paid into bank, to meet the No Town and Greymouth subscriptions of a similar amount? Alas ! for the hopelessness of expecting any tangible help to foster and encourage the mining industry. We can get what we don't want just at present, a splendid carriage road to our township, but then, be it understood, this fine level roadway will save the horseflesh, the harness, and the three or four pairs of cart wheels, the property of the local storekeepers, who invariably manage to get all the good things first, let the cost to the general body of- ratepayers be hundreds of pounds sterling. The poor bread winners of the district on the look out for gold have no range or gully tracks, no blazed direction into the neighboring auriferous ierraincognita, but must perforce, shoulder toola, and almost do a scramble at the expense of wearied limbs and lacerated hands, to reach any likely looking places they may fancy for gold. It is self-evi-dent; that this, system, of things must change, and the sooner the better. Miners must come to the front, and manf ully^ with erect head, and fearless, independent voice, demand their rights. : The unknown auriferous territory around them is their workshop, and it must be made accessible that they may get to. w.ork. That it has not been made accessible in even the most trivial scanner of way in thiß large mining district is painfully evident, while large sums plmoney have been frittered away on roads, .&o, which could well have afforded to bide their time. Over L3oofor widening and beautifying the No Town Twelve-Mile road, is as huge a blunder as has yet been committed in the County of Grey. ■ ; ■■■•; ■ ■
