; Chrisxohukoh, March 12. At the banquet to the Governor tonight, the Governor said that, though accustomed in Crown Colonies to abso~ lute power, he considered the present Government of the Colony the only one suitable for English communities where the power is resting with the people. The Governor's duty was to oil the machine of the Government, so that it ran easily. He waa interested in Canterbury, as he had known its founders. He thought the depression was on temporary, as from the resources of the Colony he felt sure of future prosperity;
