NO TOWN.

. [to the editor.] Sir, — A public meeting of the inhabitants of this Riding was held in the Good Templars' Hall on Saturday evening last, 20th instant, for the purpose of objecting to the granting of an application to the Crown Lands Board for a lease of 50 acres of land under the Land Act, 1877. Mr John Livingstone was voted to the chair, who briefly called npon anyone present that had anything to say with regard to the matter at issue. Mr Charles Gunn proposed that a petition be sent by the miners of the district to the Chief Commissioner of Crown Lands objecting to the lease applied for by Clement Parfitt being granted on the ground that the land is proved to be auriferous. This resolution was seconded by Mr Duncan M'Neil, Ebb's Gully, and carried unanimously. Thereafter Messrs Livingstone and Gunn were appointed to carry out the I intention of the meeting. A vote of thanks to the Chairman terminated the best attended meeting held in No Town for some years. The land applied for by Clement Parfitt is situated on the west side of No Town Creek, opposite the township, on an elevation of some ninety feet above the watercourse. A.bout seven years ago the firm of Gillan and Devery got permission from Warden Whiteford to fence and use the same land as a grazing paddock, but for that purpose only. At the present time there are two water raoea running through the middle of

it the entire length, besides a large reservoir. There are also two sluicing claims working on different levels at one end, and several tunnel claims in the body of the terrace. In the face of all this, it must be obvious to every reasonable person that no one but an avaricious individual like the present applicant would ever attempt to deprive the miners of their prerogative to mine on the Crown land. However, the necessary steps will be taken in due time to prevent this lea3e being granted, and the miners in this place are combined, and fully determined to •* oppose and object to all leases being granted on lands known to be auriferous.
