THE NELSON CREEK BRIDGE.

[to the editor.] Sir, — There is a rumor here that the Minister of Public Words— in -going to hand over the money intended for building the bridge on the main road over Nelson Creek to the County Chairman and let him fix the site himself, and we can pretty well guess where that is. Every bone must be. carried tofertalise the one spot. There .are two roads in this favored place already, and the pro ; posed main road will cut across them both — a complete focus of roads. Turn where you will, there is a road before you. If the country was in a flourishing state, the burden of taxation light, the miles of main road the Chairman going to abandon bad, telling heavy on teamsters and waggoners, and it was the wish of the general public, then there would be some reason for spending a few thousands in a new route, providing that a better and shorter one could be found ; [but the' facts are quite the reverse, as the. people in this district know quite well y and I ask, in the name of justice and economy; how long are we going to allow i this man to spend, or rather lavish, our money away where no public benefit can be derived from it, to justify such' an expenditure. The inhabitants of the Grey Valley, when they sighed the petition, told him plain what they meant ; but, judging from his conduct afterwards, that petition only made him more anxious to gain his point. . What- an element in a character. Such a man will uasettle everything and settle nothing. He may square things in a lawyer's-^ way, but heb cannot make it straight in the minds of those he wronged. If he- ever comes up the Grey Valley he will find ;that his actions will tell against him, as' our natures are intuitively averse to an unscrupulously sharp man. In conclusion J it seems: to me that the people of New Zealand are not supposed to use 1 their Own judgment, and an appeal- to r the Minister of Public Works; is useless. All they have got to do i 3 to pay their heavy taxes, and say nothing about as to whether it is judiciously spent or otherwise. ! ' I am, &c. , : ; •"■' . -A -Settler.
