A letter was received from the Secretary of the Greymouth Gas Company stating that the Company would accept the Council's bill for three months, and that the Company would agree to the request of the Council that the rate be reduced to L 9 per annum per public lamp. — Letter received. " Your Councillors beg to report having . arranged with the Greymouth Gas Company to accept payment of amounts due for supplying street lamps with gaa, at the rate of L 9 per annum per lamp by promissory note, bearing 10 per cent., payable at three months. Also that Mr Perkins is willing to waive claim of Ll2 10s in lieu of three months' notice, on condition of receiving a retaining fee of L 5 5s as Council's solicitor for 1879 ; and that your Committee recommend the Council to pay the sum of L 3 1193, being half of the cost incurred by the deputation proceeding to Wellington for the purpose of urging upon the Government the necessity of proceeding with the harbor works. "F. Wm. Lahman, " Chairman." Cr Lahman moved that the report be received and adopted. Cr Dupre seconded the motion. — Carried. Cr Lahman moved— "That, in pursuance of f The Bating Act, 1876/ and "The Municipal Oorporations' Act, 1876," this Council do, by this resolution, make and levy a general Borough rate of one shilling in the pound upon the value of all rateable property appearing on the Valuation Roll, assessable within thq limits of the Borough of Greymouth for, and in respect of the period commencing Friday, the 23rd day of May, 1879, thence next ensuing, and ending on Monday, the 26th day of May, 1879, for the following purposes ; that is to say — For the payment of supplying street lamps with ga3 i>lso 0 0 For the payment of a ri?ht watchman, and the 1 ,!ifcing and cleaning street lamps 156 0 0 For the general maintenance of footways, roads, streets, culverts, drains, and bridges within the Borough of Greymouth 800 0 0 £1,106 0 0 Cr Dtjpre seconded the motion. — Carried.
