The s.s Kennedy sails to-day for the north, conveying the outward San Francisco maiL % The B.s Claud Hamilton, from Melbourne, is due at Hokitika to-night, and will be tendered here immediately after arrival, probably to-morrow. .', .The fo lowing further particulars of the loss of tbe Cynthiu on the beach two mileß south of Ross, have been forwarded by Contstable Watson, stationed at Ross, to Mr • Inspector Kelly :— " Captain Thomas Swede .states, that he left Wanganui Harbor on the r morning of the 15th inst, as master of the schooner Cynthia, 56 tons register, having on board a crew 'of five men all told. The vessel was in ballast bound for Greymouth to load with coal. All went well up to Monday, the 17th inst. when it was found the vessel was making water. Three men were put to work the pumps ; the captain and one hand went between decks to shift the sand ballast and clear away about the pumps. The water was got under for a time, the pumps setting choked, the crew had to take to bailing with buckets. The vessel 'was at this time about 15 miles north of Greymouth, but owing to thick foggy weather was not able to make that port, the wind dying ont almost to a calm. The vessel drifted with the southerly current about 20 miles soath of Hokitika. The crew getting exhausted through constant balling for nearly four days, the captain and crew thought it was advisable to run the vessel nshore, being full of water within five feet of the hatch, and bo hope of saving her. The vessel was partially insnred, in what office 'or amdntit' hot known. ' ' The men have saved the moat : of their clothing, and staying at , present : close to the wreck awaiting further orders. The constable visited the wreck on Saturday, and found it completely broken up, ard strewed over the beach for nearly a mile long." The wreck and wreckage was sold on Saturday for L2O, the parchaser being a Mr Yarworth,
