AUCKLAND NEWS,
Auckland, Feb. 17. Captain Werner, of the German war ship Ariadne, made a visit to the German Puhoi settlers. Great scarcity of timber owing to the late freshes. Fifty million feet are in the creeks. Georgeson, engineer, narrowly escaped losing hia life at the Tekopua Sawmill. While placing a belt on the shaft it caught him and whirled him round, his clothing beinpr completely torn from his body. He fell to the ground severely injured. A seaman named Meaghan commited a savage assault on Captain Richardson and the mate of the ship Endymion, from London. He has been arrested. Several stacks of wheat have been burnt at Paton's farm, Papatoitoi. The fire is believed to be caused from the spark of a machine or smoking. Loss, L7OO ; insured for L4OO in the New Zealand Insurance Company. Grahamstown, Feb. 17. Large bush fires at Ohinemuri, causing destruction of mining plant. The house of Morgan Davies, Tarar u, has been destroyed by fire.
