The minutes of pievious meeting were read and confirmed. The outward correspondence was read and adopted. A letter was read from Inspector Feast stating that it would be a breach of the Jaw to allow bathing in the lagoon after 8 a.m. and before 7 p.m., until the byelaw was annulled, and requesting the Town Clerk to post notices to such effect. — Letter received. The consideration of the new by-laws then oame before the Council. Cr. Lahman was unaware that any resolution had been passed with reference to the public pound. The Mayor said as they were altering the bye-laws, and this one had been pointed out as requiring alteration, he had authorised the Town Clerk to draft the by-law. Cr Lahman wanted a by-law in reference to the driving of stock through the borough altered. A committee had been appointed two years ago to do so, but they had never brought up their report. Cr. Wickes proposed that the whole by-laws be referred to a committe consisting of the Mayor, Crs Lahman, Kilgour, Thomas, and the mover, and that they report on the matter. Seconded by Cr. Thomas and carried. The Printing Committee reported that they considered the Evening Star entitled to a share of the advertising of the Borough, but in the face of the present condition of the Borough finances they could not see their way clear to incur the extra expense. The report was adopted. The Mayor explained the results of the deputation to the Native Commissioner, which have been already published. A letter was read from the Government in reference to the letter sent re salmon and trout, drawing attention to the new regulations gazetted, and asking if these would be sufficient. Cr. Wickes said that the reply was satisfactory so far, but it did not include the doing away with set neta, which destroyed both salmon and trout. The Mayor suggested that the letter be referred to the joint committee of the Borough Council and Acclimatisation Society, the Committee to report to the Council. The Council then adjourned.
