Captain Riley has now decided on

taking her overland about a quarter of a mile. The weather had been blowing a gale at the Karamea for two days up to Monday, and the chance of saving the steamer looked very risky. The fine weather sinca set in is all in her favor. Our Karamea correspondent writes that provisions on the settlement are very scarce, and that the piling up of the steamer is likely to prove a great inconvenience to the settlers as well as serious loss to the owner. Those aboard the. steamer,, consider themselves very lucky in getting ashore at all, because there was little chance of her living in the heavy sea outside. Trying to grope the way over the bar in the dark the little steamer shipped a heavy sea, and Captain Jttileygot washed about the deck at great risk of his life j the steamer shipping more seas, became unmanageable, ami drifted through the surf until she Btruck on the sand in shallow water ; it was then blowing hard. The stranding will be a subject of enquiry by the Customs Department,
