(PA telegram from Napier.sayi :—"Robert Evans, * passerigeroh board the Rotorua, whowas reported from' Auckland to have died on board that steamer, wishes the report to be contradicted, as he is atill alive. The pa«sengerwho died was named Robert Alleivformerally a traveller for Sargood and Sons, . ■ , , At Napier, on the 13th instant, a boating accident of a serious nature at the Spit created a good deal of excitement. Oniin- " quiry it was ascertained that a canoe had been capsized on the bar, and its former occupant was then swimming ashore. Three boats at odcb put off. but were unable to weather the point at the.-end of the western mole, owing to tlw strong' tide. However, by this time the swimmer had regained terra Jtrma, and the canoe has been recovered by the Harbor Board's boat; Mr Walter Duncan was the person capsized, -vlt appears; that he ipaddledout to the'bar in bis canoe, and found: himself- in the bieak before he was well aware of it. He successfully rode over two breaker b; but the third and unlucky one broke completely over him, submerging the canoe to a depth of several feet. It came to the surface bottom up, he being still in his seat. .To extricate his legs and strikeout: for the shore were the work of: a moment, and, being a strong, good swimmer, he gained thelandat;the western spit. He was fully twenty minutes in the water, and during: this, period was swimming with every Btitch of clothing oh. '" \
