THE Grey River Argus. PUBLISHED DAILY.

SATURDAY, MAY 18, 1878.

It has been attempted to make it appear that a telegram relating to Mr Richard, Reeves's election address at Black's Point had been falsified by. us. The telegram referred to, as published yesterday in these columns, and as it reached us, stated that Mr Reeves,, one of the candidates for the representation in Parliament of the Grey' Valley electorate, is 11 Opposed to the policy of the present Government;" The attention of Mr Reeves, was . directed by telegram- to this statement, and we find that he avails himself of the earliest opportunity to give publicity, to a denial, couched in the followidg intemperate 1 Jariguage :— " This is not true, as 1 am a strong, supporter of the Grey party. I have seen original telegram, so that telegram in Argus has been fa'lpified. — Rich. Reeves." Everyone who knows Mr Reeves must be impressed with a profound sense of that gentleman's ingenuity; but even that faculty, splendidly developed as it is in Mr Reeves, will not enable him to wriggle out of the unpleasantly responsible position of having imputed to this journal the serious charge of, falsifying a telegram. Unfortunately .there are in every community persons, foolish enough 1 unquestionably to swallow any statement, However preposterous ; and it is, there« fpre, perhaps well that we are in a position to prove the utter untruthfulness of the charge. We have in our pbssesaion the original telegram ap delivered to and publjished by us, carrying the endorsement— I ''This is the message as 'delivered to the Argus. ,W.,L. -Mountfort, telegraphist." Moreover, as on Thursday night the direct [ line between Greymouth and Reefton was down, the message had to be sent round yia Nelson, Chris tchurch, and Hokitika, and we are in a position to state that it •was received in Christchurch as published by us and by the West Goad Times. It is satisfactory to be able to prove that the falsification of the message did not take I place at this end of. the line.
