SUPREME COIJRT.

Christchurch, Jan. 10.

In the Supreme Court yesterday evening, Michael Murphy, commission agemt, and W. H. Wykes, his clerk, were charged with conspiracy to defraud the creditors of one Hamil. A verdict of not guilty was returned. According to the evidence of Hamil, Murphy induced him, wheu in monetary difficulties to take, comparatively speaking, a very small amount for his stock-in-trade, a fc t h e Bame time .telling him he could set his creditors at defiance. The jury returned a verdict of not guilty, because they thought there was | nofc sufficient evidence to implicate Wykes, and Murphy could not be convicted alone of conspiracy. Judge Johnstone gave Murphy a very strong caution as to his future conduct. Today, Albert John Chapman, charged witb larceny as bailee, was found not guilty. Richard Tubman, sentenced to 15 years' imprisonment for forgery was again placed in the dock, and Judge Johnston'said thafc though he could not admit thafc fifteen years was too heavy a sentence, he had thought over the case as was his custom, and in order that it might not present an appearance of too great severity, he had decided to

reduce the sentence to ten years' imprisonment.
