TIMARU HARBOR BOARD.
Timaru, Jan 9,
The report of the Timaru Harbor Commission has been received. It is very elaborate and goes into the whole question of the practicability of the schemes proposed for a breakwater at Timaru Harbor. It puts aside Coode's plan as too expensive, and proposes a solid structure from the shore, viz— a solid mole from the shore to a distance of 900 ft, terminating in a breakwater similar to Coode's but of smaller dimensions. It is considered it would take a year to corBtruct a mole 300 ft. Regarding the travelling shingle if it is found when the mole iB constructed, any accumulation of shingle takes place in the southern angle between it and the shore, an opening might be left, and the portion then executed would protect the present landing place. It; (the report) also remarks, in the two plans handed in by the Harbor Board it accepts the general form of that marked " Pangrathoss," and suggests as the best Bite that chosen by the late Mr Balfour. It considers that " Pangrathoss's plan could not be constructed under L 500,000, and suggests it would not be prudent to undertake a work of this kind, unless that sum was definitely counted on. The Harbor Board meets to-morrow to consider the report.
