CRICKET MATCH.
I The return match between eleven of I Greyraouth and fifteen of Greenstone and Stafford took place yesterday on the Camp Reserve, and resulted in a victory for Greymouth by 33 runs. The result was unexpected, and, we think, undeserved, as the local club seems to think practice no part of cricket ; as, so far as we know, they have given this over entirely. Evidently their opponents had not the same opportunities of selecting a team, as they did not seem to work in the same accord as Greymouth did, the latter, ia spite of want of practice, working almost like a machine ; this was no doubt attributable in a great degree to their captain, Mr W. H. Perkins. Mr J. Molloy captained the Greenstone team, and Dr Acheson and Mr Fraser Martin acted respectively as umpires. The Greymouth team won the toss, and elected to take the wickets, with Gleeson and M'Gregor, to. the bowling of Morse and Lowther. The first over was a maiden, the batsmen evidently feeling their way, but the bowling was too good to be played with, and M'Gregor in trying to steal a run was too late, and lost his wicket after scoring 1. Cresswell then came on, and was shaping fairly when he was caught by Poole off the bowling of Lowther, affer making 3 ; 2 wickets for 4 runs. A. Masters then essayed the willow, and the second ball sent his partner, Gleeson, to the right about for a score of — I—3—1 — 3—1 — 5. Nixon followed, but was bowled in his second ball for— o—4— o—s. Perkins (captain) took his (lace, but was caught by Snodgrass, after adding only 1 to the score — s—l—6.5 — I—6. Howie came rext, but the first ball from Morse sent his timbers flying— 6—o— G. Things looked particularly blue for Greymouth at this time, and a funk seemed to be established, betting being a guinea to a gooseberry in favor of the combined team. Newton then joined Masters, and gave the field some leather hunting, running up the score arid renewing confidence. The bowling was changed by the substitution of Poole for Lowther, and after an over or two Newton was bowled by Morse, after making 13, with only two chances given — 7 — 13 — 19. Gorrie then joined Masters, who was caught out next ball by Morse, after making a careful — 6 — B—6 — 25. Wethered replaced him, when Gorrie was bowled by Poole after making — 2—9—2—27. North joined Wethered, but the latter, after scoring 5, hit his wicket — 10—5—32, and North carried his bat out with 1 attached to his name — the innings closing for 30 runs, 7 byes, and 2 wides ; total; 42. The Greenstone and Marsden then took the wickets, sending in as their first representatives Messrs Bissdy and Poole to the bowling of Messrs Perkins and M'Gregor. Poole scored the first hit for 2, but was ruled out 1. b. w. next ball— l—2— 2. W. Morgan took his place, when Bissdy was cleaned bowled by a ripper from M'Gregor, after adding 1 to the Bcore— 2— :l— 3. Morse followed, but was caught out after
making 1, and before he had time to expand, himself— 3—1 — 4. Spiers came next, but was bowled immediately by Perkins— 4— o—4 ; and W. Morgan wascaught by Creswell after totting up 4— 4—4— B. Molloy (captain) and Foley then ' came together, the latter adding 1, when he was bowled by Perkins— s— l—9. Lowther lost his wicketjfor— o— 6—o— 9, arid Molloy followed with another "duck!s egg n 7-0»9. T. J3onnejl and Sandle "came next, when Connell was caught, the ball glancing off his thumb without .scoring — B—o—9. Snodgrass was bowled by Perkins on the second ball— 9— oi— 9, when Lyons .joined Sandle, the latter blocking the balls steadily, but evidently afraid to hit out. Lyons went in for slogging, regardless of consequences, and; ran up— 6— lo— 6— ls, when he was run but. Sandle made— 3— H— 3— lß, when Boult and T. Morgan came together, but the latter was bowled for— 4— l2 — 4---22. Freeman, who followed, soon succumbed to a shooter from Perkins, leaving Boult to carry out his bat after making 2 ; the total innings ending— 24 runs, 5 byes, 3 leg-byes and 1 wide — 33.
After luncheon play was resumed by the Greymouth team, who ran up a score of 64, the special features of which were the batting of W. Howie and W. H. Perkins, the former running up a score of 17 in a few minutes, and the latter, in his 27, making two splendid hits of 6 each, the ball on each occasion geing clean over Inspector Hickson's house. There was no special feature in the play of the combined team in the second innings, as they seemed to have lost heart. The bowling of Messrs Perkins and M'Grcgor, and the wicket-keeping of Mr A, Masters contributed in a great degree to the success of the Greymouthians, and if the batting and fielding of- the Greenstone team had been equal to the bowling of Messrs Morse, Lowther, and Poole, the victory would certairly have been on their side. We wish .our visitors better success on their next visit." The following are the scores : — Gkevmouth— Ist Innings.
