The Superintendent haa instructed the Provincial Solicitor to try a friendly suit against the General Government for the stoppage of capitation allowance to pay interest on railways. The Immigration agent reports a demand for agricultural laborers and "single girls in excess of supply. Dunedin, March 7. The Taiaroa case was continued to-day, but not completed. The Chief Commissioner of Police informed the Licensing Bench that the present licensing system was working exceedingly well, causing the erection of a better class of houses. He had no complaints to make for the past quarter. The Secretary of the Harbor Board drew attention to incorrect information in the New Zealand Pilot respecting the approaches to Dunedin harbor. The question of public offices for Christchurch is apparently settled at last, as the hon. Mr Richardson promises the City Council that on his return to Wellington step 3 would be taken without delay for the immediate erection of buildings which are to cost L 14,000. Christchurch is now connected with Timaru by narrow guage the whole way. Port Chalmers, March 7. A case of typhoid fever ha 3 brokeu out ion Quarantine Island. The sufferer is a daughter of the keeper, and caught the infection while assisting her father to cleanse the hospital, which had been vacated five days by the passengers by the ship Corona.
