Ahaura, June 3. The latest news from Orwell Creek is that the pumps are mastering the water, which fell seven feet yesterday and last night. The water ia now two feet above the laths' level, and has been stationery for the last nine hours. By all appearance they have only tapped lodged water. Nelson, June 3. The Council lasfc night voted L2lO for the damages and expenses in the case Knyvett v. O'Conor. Donne proposed that the item be struck out ; Wastney proposed LIOO, and several members warmly defended Mr ©'Conor's action, contending that he had acted in the interest of the Province, and the Council should not permit his acts to be defrayed by voluntary subscriptions. The. item was carried by 14 to 4. Ayes — Treasurer, Solicitor, M'Gregor, Kelling, Kerr, Corbett, M'Guire, Boase, Sharp, Tarrant, Ivess, Parker, Baigent. Noes —Speaker, Wastney, Adams, Donne. M'Gregor moved " That in order to encourage the investment of capital in mining industries, and facilitate the development of- our mineral resources, this Council is of opinion that the annual rental charged on areas of land leased for quartz-mining purposes should be reduced to the nominal sum of 6s per acre." Mr Adams seconded. Several members expressed the opinion that the motion waa introduced at too late a period of the session, as, if carrisd, it would entail special legislation. It was withdrawn.
JRe the Hochstetter Water-race, Mr Corbett moved— "That his Honor the Superintendent be requested to urge upon the Minister of Public Works the necessity of completing the remaining section of the Hochstetter water-race as early as gpaaibie." ; Jdarried.lo -....'-
Mr Donne moved- "That the late Provincial Secretary having been removed from office after twenty years' of Provincial service, in consequence of an alteration in the law, this Council is of opinion that one year's salary should be granted to him as a recognition of long service and some compensation for loss of office ; and that hia Honor the Superintendent be requested to place the amount on the Appropriation Bill, less the sum voted by the Council last year." Adams seconded. Ivess and Boase opposed the motion, and Adams moved that the debate be adjourned for a week, which was carried on a division by 13 to 5.
