REEFTON CORRESPONDENCE.

[to the editob.] .„; Sir— l am reluctantly compelled to again appear in the columns of your paper to correct your " Reefton Correspondent." In his last letter, dated' 3rd inst, referring to the Argyle claim, he says, ":Shares quoted last week at L6O can now be purchased at L 50." This would, of course, lead any person at a distance to suppose that the Vcilue of a share in the claim was LSO ; but immediately afterwards, he says that "one-eighth was submitted at auction, and knocked down at L 63, but the genuinness of the sale is questioned, because the purchaser was a shareholder, who could have obtained a similar interest at L 56 that morning^ 3 ' As I was the purchaser, I do not think I am over-stepping the hounds of propriety in telling your "Own Correspondent' 1 ' that he has told an untruth— a ntt unsual thing with him even outside newspaper correspondence. From your correspondents letter, I think it would be a rather difficult matter for an outside shareholder to arfive'at an idea of the value of a share in the company, as he at first says that " shares" can be purchased at LSO, and that an "eighth" could be obtained at L 56. Your correspondent cannot, of course, help having a shot at the " Herald," and the Road Board (his reference to the latter's proceedings, containing two gross and wilful misrepresentations), but his reasons being so well appreciated in this district, 1 need only say that they are, like all his statements, both oral and written, received cum grano salts. - I am, &c, L. Da vies. Reefton, Nov. 6. [to the editok.] Sir — In reference to the above subject, I beg to state that I am the auctioneer | alluded to by your correspondent, and that 1 did sell an eighth of a full snare in the j Argyle Company to Mr L. Davies for! L 63, and could have disposed of two other similar interests at the same sale if I had; had them in hand at L 62 each. \ I am, &c, | Richd. Reeves. \ [All we can say in the matter is, that, : not being ourselves in a position to dis-, criminate between what is, and what isj not correct, in our correspondent's com-: munications, we are, of course, compelled; I to depend for the reliability, of our in-; formation upon him. We regret if he has,' as is alleged, misrepresented the facts alluded to.— Ed.. G.R. A.] j
