The last but one of the Government expeditions for observing the transit of Venus sailed from Plymouth for Christchurch, New Zealand, in the clipper ship Merope, on July 4, The party consists of Major H. S. Palmer, R. E. , chief astronomer, in charge ; Lieut. L. Darwin, R.E., assistant-astronomer, and photographer ; Lieutenant H. Crawford, R.N., assistant- astronomer and three noncommi3sioned officers of the Royal Engineers trained to the use of the photo-helioyraph. His Majesty the Emperor of Austria has conferred on Dr. W. L. Buller, of New Zealand, " in consideration of his services to science." the dignity of Knight of the Imperial Order of Francis Joseph. Dr. Buller returns to New Zealand by the out going mail. The Hon. Saul Samuel, Postmaster General of New South Wales, is the subject of one of a series of word-portraits of "Eminent Jews " appearing from week to week in the Sun. Mr Edward Owen Giblin, of Hobart Town, Tasmania, and Mr James Arthur Hardy, of Adelaide, have been admitted members of the Royal College of Surgeons.
