Melbourne.— The Argus of the 2nd inst. reports as follows . — In the import market general business is without the slightest appearance of activity, and the only speciality run upon has been hops, these having met with veiy considerable attention. Breadstuffs are rising in value, as far as regards wheat, the advance realised at the auction sales In the forenoon being fully 3d per bushel. About 2000 bushels were quitted at 6s 2d to 6s 3d, and sales privately have also been made at similar rates. Flour in parcels is still quoted at Ll2 12s 6d to Ll2 15s, the article not having yet responded to the movement in wheat Bakers' lots are, however, selling at Ll3 to Ll3 ss, bags returned. Oats are very duD and neglected, notwithstanding that supplies ate so meagre. Quotations range from 4s. lOd for low to 5s 2d for good feeding, and 5s 6d for milling. Candles have had increased attention. We heard of 1700 boxes of Brandon's and D.R.O.'s having been taken up at equal to 10|d, and we hear of further business pending. Teas are somewhat quiet. Of the Mangerton's new congous 400 packages have found buyers at up to Is lid. Sugars are moving off slowly ; we learn of the quittance of a line of 500 bags low yellows at L 29. A large business has been done in Tasmanian 1874 hops, fully 400 bales having changed hands at prices rising from Is 3d to Is 7d ; at the latter figure, one line of 70 bales alone was placed. A later telegram from England reports a further advance as having occurred in the home market. Trade sales of Two Seas and Venus tens tobacco are mentioned at Is 4d. A parcel of Havannah cigars will be sold publicly to-morrow. Sales of JDKZ geneva (20 bottles) have been made
