INANGAHUA MINING NEWS.

[herald, 10th oct.] Fiery Cross — Some very rich stone was struck in the lower level on Friday. The stone is described as being superior to any yet raised in the district. The reef where this stone is being obtained is said to be sft wide. Anderson's — There is no lack of stone to keep the battery going. A general cleaning up will take place on the 2nd of November. The main drive north has been discontinued for the present, and a cross-cut is now being driven with a view of testing the ground and proving the ' course of the reef. In the second north evel the reef has not yet been picked up, but assuming the break to be similar to that above in the old tunnel, the reef' will be again laid bare by the middle of next week, there being only 10ft intervening between the reef and the present workings. The reef in the present workings above the lower tunnel is between 4ft and sft thick. Invincible.— The legal manager of this company, instructed by the directors, has forwarded a letter to the Anderson's Creek conveying certain proposals requiring united action pending a decision upon which the company have ceased active mining operations for the present. Golden Fleece.— The supply of stone now being raised from this mine is unusually large, and sufficient, it is thought, to keep the Ajax stampers going until the Ist of November, when the largest parcel of gold ever obtained at one crushing in the Murray Creek district will be turned out. The yield of amalgam for last week's crushing from the top plates alone exceeded 300oz. United Band of Hope. — All hands are still employed in sinking the shaft, the progress of which is necessarily slow, owing to the great depth from which all the stone has to be raised by hand, and from foul air which interferes with the workings. The manager, Mr Williams, recently escaped narrowly losing his life, his hut — which he had only left a minute before— being literally smashed to pieces by a falling tree. Energetic. — The contract for raising quartz at 7s 6d per ton has been abandoned. The men engaged to take out stone at this certainly low figure ceased work and threw up their contract on Monday. The reason for such action is stated to be in consequence of their having an unusual amount of "dead" work to do in order to put the mine in working order, and so operate successfully. Other tenders are likely to be invited, and in the interim men have been set to work getting out stone. One of the berdans recently brought up has been placed in position, and commenced work on Monday last. Wealth of Nations. — The machine is now at work, having been started on Tuesday. The slip has been cleared away, and the race f uly repaired.
