CHINA AND JAPAN.
' Singapore, Aug. 20. A rupture is threatened between China 1 and Japan, on account of the Formosa ; expedition, aud China is making immense ; preparations for war. . London, 4.ng. 22. At the wool sales the opening competition is well maintained, aud prices continue very firm. The coru market haa experienced a con- , siderable fall, and the weather is favorable for harvest operations. Copper is quiet : Chili, L 76 ; Wallaroo, LB7. ' Tin is inactive : Straits, L 93 ; Australian, L 92 to L 93. Dr Haast, of Canterbury, New Zealand, has received the Order of the Iron Cross. London, Aug. 25. Austria recognises the Spanish Government, but Russia refuses to do so. The foreign arrivals of wheat are abundant, and there is a fall in price in consequence. At a sale of new wheat yesterday purchases were made reluctantly at 7s, but a reduction took place on shipping parcels. At the wool sales competition continues extremely vigorous, and prices show a general advance as compared with previous sales of a halfpenny to a penny halfpenny.
