WESTLANDERS IN WELLINGTON.

["WEST COAST TIMES, JULY Jl.] j A gentleman,, whp is an. old resident of! this district, but who is at present taking j a tour through the Provinces of ; the Co- j lony, furnishes us with the following in- j formation in reference to the doings of j Westcoasters at the Empire City :-^" To i find, lodgings," he says, "at present in! Wellington, is by no means' an : easy! matter, and had it not. been for a friend! of mine I should have experienced a,difficulty in procuring a bed on the night of my arrival. I recommend anyone coming? to the Empire City this month, to engage lodgings througK the medium of the tele- ■ graph. . I found many of our most enter- ! prising citizens of the West Coast here. It is very painful to find, tA almost every ? town in my '-travels, 1 the most energetic, persevering men, in fact the right sort of men to make a new. Colony prosper, having left Westland, not on account of the climate, which they speak of .as not being equalled in New Zealand, or f any other Colony, but who complain of there being, no' scope for enterprise. No sooner, they say, isa speculation undertaken on the; Coast than your fellow citizens 'regard you with jealousy, and a,re more ready to assist in the failure : than ' to help you in the endeavor to make the speculation a success. Messrs) Mace and 'Arkeliara building a steam brewery in -the .centre of the town. Their engine is fifteen horsepower, with : boiler complete; > They will be able to blew twenty hogshead: at. ; a time, and should their business require it they will be able to. brew twice .in fine .day. Their cellar is of largo 1 capacity, holding 300 casks at a' time. The firm' commences operations on the 10th inst ; William Wilson, of the : Otago Foundry, Dunedin, is the successful tenderer for the kiln ironwork. It is reported that Mr Findlay, from the Coast, is starting to build. a steam sawmill on the Manchester' Block, about 80 miles from this town, which will prove very beneficial to the district, as. the population is at present very small. MrN/ees is in partnership; with. a Mr Fisher, they have bought the lease of the Oxford Bush,

erected a saw-mill there, and are'also/ building a saw-mill near the Ashburton, both localities being easy of access to^ Christchurch, which speculation promises to be crowned with success. I have met in my travels many of our business mcii, indeed, too many to mention in my letter. There is a large quantity of pipes lying on the wharf here and at Lyttelton, which I presume are for the Westland waterraces. The only members here from the Coast are Messrs Harrison, ofGreymouthj and O' Conor, of the Nelspn district. The Apsembly ! met, but only business of a formal nature has, as yet, been disposed bf." ■- ■" ■•-■■-- V *-■■;•"
