By the Albion, for Melbourne, the National Bank shipped from Greymouth 18790z 18dwt 12gr of gold. The s.s. Omeo, which was due to-day froi^ Nelson, did not put in an appearance, and the rough sea outside would have rendered tendering her impractible Should the sea go down we may expect her to put in her , appearance to-day. Some time will elapse before we shall see the good old boat again, as it has been decided to put her on the slip slip at Melburne, and give her a thorough .;•; , overhaul.- ■ .'. ■-.-.■ ..• '■ ■■■■■■•■ ■••.. : .The new steamers, four in number, which are being built for the San Francisco service, are being rapidly constructed. Two of them are building on the Clyde, and two on the Tyne. Those on the stocks on the Tyna are being built by Mr James Laing, and are to be of the following dimensions : — Length, . 370 f t; beam, 38ft 3in ; depth of hold, 31ft ; tonnage, 2700 ; speed, 11 knots. The machinery is by Messrs R. and W. Hawthorne, ■Newcastle-on-Tyne. The- other boats, on the Clyde, are by Messrs Randolph and Elder. The first vessel is to be ready in December next, and one the month after. No expense is being spared to make them in every way suitable for the trade in which they are. engaged. Among the papers presented to Parliament was a copy of a dispatch from the Secretary of State, with enclosure relative to the employment of Polynesians on board; her Majesty's vessels. Captain. Chapman, in a despatch to Commodore Goodenough, dated H.M.S. Dido, at Brisbane, 10th November, 1873, says :— ". Perhaps it would not be out of place to remark here that 1 am, by further experience and knowledge of the islands in the South Seas, more than ever convinced . that advantages would -accrue both to the service, the inhabitants of the islands, the suppression of kidnapping, and to the interests of humanity generally, by the employment of Polynesians in her Majesty's , ships during their service in the South Seas, •^ -^-as^Kroomen are on the West Coast of Africa station, as advanced in my letter, No. 16, of the 6th March" last/- '' The English language, manners, and customs would be widely : spread in ia short time, even in the islands that are now savage and barred to themiesionaries, iand her Majesty's ships Would always have interpieters on board, which alone is of very great importance." Lord Kimberley expresses, the. opinion that .the efficincy of her Majesty's ships in preventing and punishing outrages might probably be increased if it should be found practicable to employ Polynesian on board as suggested. ,The Commodore of .the Australian station is ' ' also instructed to make further enquiries as tothe alleged enlistment or kidnapping of - natives by Englishmen carrying the French flag.— Melbeurne Argus. ;
