Mr O'Conor held a public meeting last evening in re the tenure of the Westport Colliery Reserve. He favors the control being given to the Superintendent and Provincial Council, and is adverse to control by the Borough Council. The WestpOrfc public are much dissatisfied.

The Kenilworth has just arrived from the South Sea Islands. She brings Samoan passengers, who report that the first intelligence they received of the gold-fields there was conveyed to them by New Zealand papers two months ago, and they did not know that Consul Williams had taken any specimens from the Islands. They state that there is no truth in the alleged discovery.

The Tribune say 3 it learns on good authority that there will not be any Volunteer rifle competition next year, but that Government will encourage to a greater extent rifle competitions in the various Provinces.
