MOONLIGHT CREEK.
A public meeting of the miners and other residents of Moonlight Creek was held at Smith's Hotel on the evening of 16th June, to take into consideration the proposed removal of the Warden from the Grey Valley, and to discuss other matters relating to nhe district. The chair was taken by Mr C. H. Smith, and the first resolution, which was as follows, was proposed by Mr S. Samuels :— Resolved— "That this meeting is of opinion the mining interests of the Grey Valley require the services of a resident Warden ; that wch an officer is absolutely necessary ; and that the Government be requested to retain the Warden in his present position."
The resolution was seconded by Mr Thomas M'Laughmn, and carried unanimously. A discussion then took place about the various requirements of the district, and strong opinions were expressed that it has hitherto been shamefully neglected in the matter of tracks and means of communication.
Ultimately the following residents were appointed a Local Improvement Committee, and their first business would be to draw up a memorial to the Road Board, asking that a foot track, available at all times, should be made from the foot of the creek to the township : — Messrs R. Howe, S. Samuels, Wm. Holgate, James Boyett, and C. H. Smith. These gentlemen also undertook to lay the resolution relative to the Warden before the Provincial Secretary, but, unfortunately, owing to the impassable condition of the creek on Sunday, they were unable to reach Ahaura in time. The expression of opinion of the miners of Moonlight will, however, be forwarded to the Government along with similar resolutions passed in other districts.
