WESTLAND PROVINCIAL COUNCIL.
Wednesday, June 17. [from the west coast times.] question of executive. Mr White stated that in consequence of the adverse vote of the Council last evening, he had, with his colleagues, tendered the resignation of the Executive to the Superintendent that forenoon, and had suggested that Mr Woolcock, the mover of the resolution, should be sent for. In reply to this communication, a memorandum had been received from his Honor, addressod to Mr Guinness, as follows ;— "Memorandum for the Executive Council. The Superintendent learns with regret that the Council have passed a resolution of want of confidence in the Executive Council as at present constitnted. Under the circumstances the Superintendent has no alternative but to accept the resignation of yourself and colleagues and send for Mr Woolcock, as you advise. Signed, Jas. A. Bonar, Superintendent." Mr White, in tabling this memorandum, said ; As to the sincerity of his Honor's regrets, I have nothing to say, but truth compels me to state that his Honor held out no helping hand to his late Executive to avert the necessity of their resignation. Mr Woolcock was then called upon, and stated that the Superintendent had sent for him this forenoon with the view of his taking steps to form an Executive. He had acceded to the request, but as the intimation only came to him about noon, he had no 1 ; had that time to devote to the matter he should have desired. He had every confidence in being able to meet the Council to-morrow evening with the names of an Executive which, he believed, would possess the entire confidence of the Council. The. necessary arrangements could not well be perfected in so short a time as was allowed him, but he hoped by tomorrow evening to bring down not only the names of an Executive, but likewise some rough outline of the line of policy intended to be proposed by the new Government. On this latter point, however, he would not make a distinct promise, though he hejd out every hope that such should be the case.
Mr Thomas Carlyle lias been re-elected President of the Edinburgh Philosophical Institution, one of the very few publicj if honorary, positions he takes pleasure in filling.
