Messrs Corbett and Boase, members of the Nelson Provincial Council for the Grey district returned from Nekon by the p.s. Charle3 Edward yesterday. We are requested to state that Miss Aitken (Mrs Bun ten) will visit Reef ton, for the purpose of giving a series of entertainments, on Tuesday. She would have done so sooner, but has been delayed owing to the serious illness of Mr Bunten. We have to acknowledge receipt from the Viuto'ian Government of some valuable re; turns connected with the mining department of that Colony, namely, the voluminous reports of the Mining Surveyors and Registrars for the quarter ended 31st March, 1574, and the mineral statistics of Victoria for 1873, from both of which, on some future occasion, we propose to make copious extracts. The Westport and Charleston line of coaches is again in the market for sale, and if not previously disposed of by private contract, will be brought under the hammer on the 6th prox. The Little vVonder leader has been struck in the Lyell Creek Company's tunnel. This gratifying result has been obtained after having driven upwards of 50Uft. The stone shows an excellent prospect. His Excellency the Governor, who is now in Kelson, is the guest of Mr Dodson, the Mayor. There was to be a public ball in the Provincial Buildings last evening. In the Municipal CounciJ. of Wellington, a motion has been, carried on the voices, that in future the Mayor of the city should be elected by the ratepayers direct, and not by the Council, and that the necessary alteration in the law be made, Application will no doubt be made to Parliament for an amendment of the Municipal Corporations Aot. By a telegram which appears in the Hokitika papers, and which we ought to have received, we learn that on the 16th inst., at Invercargill, John Brennan, late cook at the Harp of Erin Hotel, and formerly a seaman on board the Scimitar, came back on Friday, asked for some dinner, and was sent to the kitchen, where there was a little girl named Mary Hall, aged fifteen. In reply to some : question of Brennan's, she was heard to saj T , " Mind your own business." He said he would think nothing of cutting her throat like a young sucking pig. A few minutes after JBrennan was seen with an adze in his
h.inl, saying "I have clone it." He bad split the l>ack part of the girl's head open. The girl was taken to the hospital, but is not expected to recover. Brennan is fortyfive years old, and is supposed to eutertain tender feelings towards the girl, who, with her parents, came out in the Scimitar. A late Invercargill telegram says : — " Brennan was brought up before the .Resident Magistrate this morning, and remanded for eight days. The girl having recovered consciousness, her deposition was taken at the Hospital. She remembered him saying "I will kill you." Did not know why he said so, she had never done anything to him. Brennan, who was present, exclaimed, ' God bless you, not on this earth T don't wish it.' " The Western Star is a peculiar paper. In its issue of the 23rd lilt, there appeared the following advertisement : — " W&nte ), a Wife. Pleasing manners preferred to good looks. Must be accomplished, and at the same time able to do housework. Address, W.A., Post Office, River ton, enclosing carte-de-visite and address." The successful result of this advertisement may be gleaned from an extraordinary announcement published in the same p^per on the 30th ult. ;— " Public Notice. — Our Editor having, in a fit of mental aberration, committed matrimony, this issue is rather weak. What effect on the future of Southland this will have remains to be proved.— The Printer.
