ROADS IN THE GREY VALLEY.

[to the editor.] Sir, — On the Ist of the present month the Government of the Province of Nelson handed over all roads and tracks to the control of the Road Boards, whgr-e such existed, and expect the said Boards to maintain them in an efficient manner, although the Government cannot be ignorant of the fact, that these bodies have no funds at their disposal (either for making or repairing these roads or tracks) — at least I can vouch for the Ahaara Road Board being in this dilemma. During the late heavy flocd, the track that then existed to this place from Totara Flat, was completely destroyed, and letters and telegrams innumerable have been forwarded to nearly all the members of the Council, including the Superintendant and Provincial Engineer, no notice whatever has been taken up to the time of writing this letter. The Government might as well prohibit business people from opening stores at all, as not to make roads to places that are actually necessary, not only for the carriage of goods but for the safety of people's lives. A company is willing now to start for the purpose of constructing a dray road on the terrace from Totara Fiat to Granville, but cannot obtain the authority from the Superintendent. \amat a loss to knqw what this, gentleman does with the numerous letters., telegrams, and petitions that he receives, when he must know they are for the benefit of the Province ovep which he reigns. No official survey has even taken place, although ordered by hia Honor last June., and J know of a likely contractor I who would forfeit L.IQO if he gqijld not | complete the work within four weeks (weather permitting) from signing contract, at a cost considerably under LBOO. I trust the members of " Sleepy Hollow" will take this letter into -their favorable consideration at once, and not show so much apathy in forwarding public works for the benefit of the Province at large. I am, &c, A Sufferer. Grauville, April 28, 1874.
