THE Grey River Argus. PUBLISHED DAILY WEDNESDAY, APRIL 29, 1874
We are glad to learn by a telegram from the Minister of Public Works, received yesterday, that it is the intention of the Government to push on the completion of the Brunner Railway as fast as possible. Since we laat wrote upon this subject several important alterations and improvements on the original specifications have been authorised, and it is considered to be probable that the line will be open for traffic within a month or two of the stipulated time. The silence that has been preserved with respect to the bridge across the Grey River at the coal-mine 3, has had the effect of disquieting those who are interested in the coal-mines on the Nelson side of the river, but we are able to state that the designs for this bridge are now completed, and that tenders for the work will be called for in about a week from this time. We are not aware what the design is, but we presume that the original idea of constructing simply a wire tramway has been abandoned, and that a substantial bridge will be erected. It is, as we are informed, the intention of the Government that the bridge shall be completed within the time allotted to the construction of the railway, so that no undue advantage should be given to the Greymouth Coal Company over its competitors on the other side.
