THE SYDNEY GOLD' CUP.
Speculation, the. winner of the Sydney Gold Cup, is said to have won for his owner L 20,000 upon; the .race, # which is thu"3 described in the telegraphic report - in the Melbourne Daily Telegraph; — . The .weather this morning was gloomy but fine, and thousands proceeded' to the course. His Excellericy'-tne" Governor was again present. The chief interest in the day's proceedings centered in the race for the Sydney Cup^for whiohithere was 'a ■ splendid field of twenty-six horses. Horatio, Speculation,- and .Myrtle were all good favorites! andduiihg the previous night and this morning Fugleman was largely in demand. The rice' was good throughout, but froni the time of passing the, trainers' stand/the result.was never once in, doubt. i; From that; point Speculation led, but along the straight run Dagworth made an effort to catch him, but
was unable to do so, and Speculation won by half a length in 3min 39sec, a second more than was occupied by Vixen last year. Speculation, after winning the Cumberland Stakes on Monday in such good time, was made a strong favorite for the Cup at the light weight, and backed to win a good deal of money, and this result, therefore, was not unexpected. Besides Speculation, Dagworth, and Fugleman the following also started : — Reprieve, Javelin, Horatio, The Prophet, Blue Peter, Priam, M'Callum Mohr, Mentor, Ace of Trumps, Stanhope, Myrtle, Syren, Master M'Grath, Sylvia colt, Stirling, Nydia, J. At the hill the following was the order : — Prophet, Champagne, Speculation, Fugleman, and The Abbot ; and at the trainers' stand Speculation led by two lengths, followed by Champagne, Stanhope, Prophet, Burwood, Stirling, Ladybird being last. Speculation had increased his lead to four lengths at the turn, with Champagne and others the same as before. Passing the stand they were running in this order — Speculation, Stanhope, Mentor, Burwood, Blue Peter, Prophet, Nydia, Champagne ; Horatio on the outside, and Stirling and Myrtle coming up. At Cutt's Speculation still led, with Stanhope next, but beaten, the rest in the following order — Blue Peter, Bnrwood, Reprieve, and Mr Tait's two -'next. Passing the sevenfurling post Speculation was leading two lengths in front of Dagworth, Burwood, Fugleman, and M'Callum Mohr coming up. At the trainers' stand Speculation was still leading, Sylvia colt, Dagworth, and M'Callum next, and the rest in a bunch, and coming round the turn Speculation, Dagworth, and Sylvia colt were clear of everything, with M'Callum next. Coming down the straight Dagworth made a plucky attempt to catch Speculation, but failed to do so, - Speculation winning by half a length. The others came home as follows : — Fugleman, M'Callum Mohr, J. L., Sylvia colt, Myrtle, Burwood, Blue Peter, Syreu, Excelsior. Time, 3min 39sec.
