Tho Napier lighthouse was lighted for the first time on 9th March. It is situated on a small plateau south of the gaol, which is considered by competent authorities to be the most suitable site for ,1 he purpose. The building is 2Gft in height, octagonal in shape, and 13ft in diameter at the base. The lamp and tho accompanying fitting cost upwards of L 345 in Edinburgh (says the Herald) exclusive of any freight, insurance, or other charges, and is said to be one of the mo&t complete description.
