The s.s, Alhambra, from Melbourne direct, arrived off Hokitika at midnight on Wednesday^ and w.-is immediately tendered by the Waipara. which was waiting for her in the roadstead. The cargo, passengers, and mails for both Greymouth and Hokitika were landed, as there was no steamer in port; here at the time. The Alhambra left Hokitika at 5 a.m yesterday, and passed here at 7 a.m. proceeding on to Nelson. On the afternoon's tide the Waipara ran up from Hokitika with the ■ Greymouth portion of the Alhambra's passengers and cargo. The p.s Lioness returned from Hokitika yesterday afternoon, and towed to sea the schooner Euphrosyne, bound for Timaru with a cargo of 'sawn timber. The Alice Maud was loading at Melbourne for this port when the Alhambra left. The 8,8. Kennedy passed this port going south yesterday morning, so that she may be expected here to-day. The next of M'Meckan and Co. 's boats which was to leave Melbourne for New Zealand was the Otago, via the Bluff. She was to leave on the arrival of the English mail The Colonial Government steamer Luna arrived in the Buller, River on the 9th inst. in charge of Captain Fairchild, on her trip round the coast with a survey party deputed to select lighthouse 'sites',' and also having on board several excursionists. The Luna left the Bluff on the 24th February ; on the 25th was at Otag'6's Retreat; as Kisbeeßay on the 26th, and Cuttler Cove on the 27th. Strong gales prevented her leaving ; but on the 28th visited Windsor Point and Green Island, to allow an inspection, with the view of selecting the best site for a lighthouse After getting, away a gale caused shelter to be taker): in North fort, Chalky Inlet, and she was detained there until Monday morn* ing. On that day (2nd March) Dusky and Breaksea Sounds were visited, and Doubtful and Thompson Sounds on the 3rd. The 4th was spent, in Bligh Sound, and the two following days in Mil ford Sound. Here the Jessie :Niccol, Mr Wood's yacht, was met. On the 7th left early for Martin's Bay, but owing to the surf, being high could not enter. A gale also came on from the north, and prevented the Luna leaving Big Bay, but at five o'clock a strong south-west breeze sprung up, and a start was made. Sunday was very fine. The Luna anchored off tho Steeples before daylight on Monday, and arrived at Westport at eleven o'clock. The survey _Darty were to co down to Capo Vonim-d »ua select tne precise i site fur the lighthouse, on tho area whence timber has been cleared since the last visit of the Luna. The yacht Jessie Niccol, spoken in Milford Haven, . belongs to Messrs Niccol Brothers, of Auckland, and- has been chartered by Mr Wood for a pleasure, trip | round the South Sea Islands, 'and for the collection of photographs and curioßitiep. The steamer left the Buller on the evening of the 10th, calling at Cape Farewell, and probably Mona Island, and then making direcc for Wellington.— Westport Tipies ■
