Dunedin, Feb. 14. The following are items per later papers by Mongol : —
Henry Harrison, sculptor, is executing a bust of the claimant in marble. A large army conscription is taking place in Russian Poland.
The Danes have addressed, a petition to the King of Sweden to allow them to construct a tunnel under .the Sound.
There is a Kaffir war in Natal. The outbreak occurred through a chief refusing to register some firearms. He was followed by a detachment, of Carbineers, who were surrounded by Kaffirs in the bush, and three killed, one being the son of the Colonial Secretary. The Hon. Major Erskine had a subsequent encounter with 90 Kaffirs. It is said he was shot. The Scimitar, which sailed the same day as the Mongol, is crowded with passengera. She had the seeds of sickness on board when she left. Great activity prevails in the German arsenals. The guards are being rapidly supplied with the new Manson arm. New field pieces are also being turned, out. In a recent case the_ Lord Chief Justice said the manner iv which English witnesses were browbeaten by lawyers was simply disgraceful. Bluff, Feb. 14. The Otago, Captain J. M'Lean, arrived at 10 a.m. She left Melbourne at 4 p.m. on the Bth. She brings the English mail, 03 saloon and 31 steerage passengers, and 403 tons of cargo for all ports. Sails for Dunedin to-day at 4 p.m. London. The Queen of the North, for Napier, was spoken with on November 21. She has a number of immigrants aboard, including fifty single girls in charge of Miss Herbert. Working men are returuing in shoals from America in consequence of the distress there. • The exports to New Zealand to Dec. 4 were L 4,000,000., 000,000. Miss Goddard was a financial failure in India. A great fire has occurred in Yeddo, by which 500 houses were destroyed. The Queen secured the principal prize for Devons at the Smithfield Cattle Show. The reconstruction of the Alexandra Palace is proceeding rapidly, and it will be ready for re-opening about the end of June. Binnerman has been arraigned before the magistrates at Plymouth for alleged violence on an actress during a perform-
