THE STRIKE AT THE BRUNNER COAL MINE.

[TO THE EDITOK.] j! The letter appearing in this morning's issue commenting on the reasons assigned for the strike at the Brunner Mine is jso inaccurate, and abounds with such apparent inconsistencies, that it is but juat that the public should be made acquainted with the true state of the case. ■ The reasons are simply as stated in the handbill which is found to be soobjec-. tionable, viz., the dangerous system pursued in working the mine, and the reduction of 6d per ton for getting the coal. The third one, viz., the incompetency.of the manager, only affects us so far that the other two are a consequence of it. The first, and the one that is justly considered the most important as affecting the life of the miner, we took the only means in our power to settle. A meeting of the miners was called, and a deputation chosen to wait on Mr M'Carthy. The decision arrived at and agreed to by Mr M'Carthy and the deputation, was to refer the new plan to a competent mining engineer, as he confessed his inability to form an opinion on the question in dispute, and we were to be made acquainted with the result the following morning. The consultation with the engineer does not appear to have been palatable, for when morning came the question was : as far from settlement as ever. j Also, the absurdity of the following extract from the letter, referred to is quite apparent, without comment, when, they made .objection to working at one particular point they were told that any other in the mine would do as well, i( provided they got out the qnantity of coal." Neither did we ever agree to a reduction in the price of getting the coal. The Miners of the Brdnner Coal Mine. Brunnerton, Feb. 12, 1874. . (For remmvder of News see 4th page. )
