The disbursements were : Executive, Executive establishment, and Land and Public Works department, £1813 ; Wardens, gaols, and police, £2964 ; hospitals, £1140 ; maintenance of destitute poor, £426; Nelson Lunatic Asylum, ,£359 ; education— grants to Provincial schools £1950, other charges, including purchase of a site for a school, ,£232. The items under the head "Miscellaneous" amount to £3282, which sum includes .£2600 for the purchase of Westport sections. The expenditure on public works on the gold-fields during the quarter was £1604. Grants to Road Boards, am pun ted to £825, and £5596 was expended upon public works on

the South-west Gold-fields, the principal items being : — Road from Hope to Lyell, £1371 ; road, Charleston to Westport, via Addison's, £595 ; Brunner Coal-mine, £1811-: grants to Gold-field District Boards, £500.
