VICTORIAN YIELD OF GOLD FOR 1873.

- ■• ■■•■•■■■ [the age.] We are now in a positiou to give the «xact yield of gold for the past year. It r flnay be reckoned up as follows : — Exported during 1873, as shown by the 'Custom Houbo returns, 1,115,9870z; re-

ceived at the mint, 125,3040z ; quantity ■ on hand at the mint and banks on the 31st December, 1873, 99,9350z: Total, 1,341,2260z. From this amount must be deducted the quantity held by the banks - on : tne ; 31st December, 1872, which was 196,3310z, and the ]3,7330z held by the mint pri;the 31st December, 1873, which is included in tho 125,3040z passed in for coinage during this year. Deducting then ; the total amounts of 196,3310z and the ! ,1|3,733.0ia ifrom the gross amount, given ", aljpve of , 1,341,2260z, we arrive at '.-, 1,131, 1620z as the total yield given for ,: 1873. In 1872 the yield was 1,317,2750z i 'thus showing a decrease during 1873 of ; 186,1130z. • -The mining snrveyors's reports gave the \t6tal yield for 1872 at 1,138,4480z. Up ; ;tb the present time, the mining depart- -> Went have not; received the whole of the returns for the last quarter of 1873 ; and ' ,'it is, therefore, impossible to say what ': their estimated yield for the year will be; but as the number of miners employed on the. gold-fields in 1873 is set down at ,'Jabout 3000 less than the previous year, it may be anticipated that the mining r >-!retnrris will show a decrease in the yield. The amount of coined gold issued from the mint during the year was L83^,000, Consisting of L 762,000 in sovereigns, and L 82,000 in half-sovereigns. . ■'".„,
