A-very stzcOr feeling has set in 'about the : matter/ whU should be allayed as soon as possible. ....■ ; I am, &c., ; r ': : ; J. WV'VJokEs,^ Honorary Secretary Sub-Committee Callaghan's Creek, Ahaura, r January 20, 1874. ' ' ■ !
. ■ -.,' [copy.] • Sib—^A few days ago I received mtice from the members of the sub-committee appointed to- collect funds, &c., in aid of the Grey River .Hospital, to conveae a public meeting for, the purpose of considering the rules and regulations o: the institution, as sent up with the Seventh annual report. ... * Such meeting.has been held/ and a resolution condemnatory of Rule 32 p*ssed by a majority of, aeven to three/ the meet- , ing expressing a strong opinion . thai the Central .Committee have made a retrograde movement thereby, and acted in direct opposition to a recommendation of the retiring Central Committee for the year 1871-72. . . Of clause 12 of the rules ad present in force it is stated that " Ticket' holders 3hall not be entitled to any privileges as such," &c., &c. ; yet there is no rule specifying- what those privileges' are (in contradistinction with non-ticket holders), with the exception of that stated in Clause .A.LI. .. : It may. be mentioned; th^ti w. a member of Committee, the 1 movement was opposed by myself to the utmost, and finding the matter so strongly supported by the other members (even objecting to allow the matter to stand over until the subscriptions for the coming year were collected^, I tendered my resignation as hoa. sea, which resignation would^ not be accepted. . ' Strong feeling was also expressed as to the " declaration," some speakers illustrating with force the effect' that tha presentation of such a formidable dooument would be likely to have on a mind already prostrate with sickness, Trusting that you will please to accept of my ■resignation, and lay these facts before the Central Committee,,. or Committee of Management without delay. I have the honor to be, Your very old servant, J. ; V7. Jones. To the Hon. Sec. Grey Rivei Hospital, Greymouth. [We are informed by the : honorary secretary to the hospital that rule 32 does not apply at all to ticket holders, and the "declaration" is also void with regard to them. As to, rule .] 2, if ought to -i be read as follows :— " Every holder of an anuual tickei; shall be entitled to^Kummediate .admission to the Hospital, sub« ject to the medical .officer's, report, free from aU qlaims for support ; f>ut ticketholders shall not be entitled .to any privilege/as such, till one inpnth' after the date of the issue of their' tickets." We may state that the \ latter, r clause was* framed' to put a stop to ia'system of imposition which was rapidly increasing, of persons waiting until they were sick before they took out their tickets,, when, by the expenditure of one guiiieai'they received comfortable quarters in the hospital and medical attendance .until they_were well.
