RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT, AHAURA.
Friday, January 23. (Before C. Whitefoord, Esq., R.M.) Elliott v. M'Laren.— The defendant was charged with wilfully destroying property belonging to tlie complainant. The parties .are neighbors. at Riveryiew, New Ahaura, and have been on bad terms for some time. .The defendant was complained against on this occasion for damaging, a sluice-box, by ;j chopping it with an axe. The quarrel seems to haVe originated out of a case which was; before the Court at the last sitting, in which the parties were engaged. The Magistrate dismissed the charge, but lectured the defendant severely on. his general condupt towards the complainant, and cautioned him as to the. future.' • ' ' : .CIVIL CASES. , ; Loftqimt v. Young.— A claim of Lls 10s, for making a track at Granville. When Mr Curtis was at Granville, during his recent electioneering tour, the want of a track in a certain direction was pointed out to him, and as Superintendent he promised that if a given sum was expended on the work, those who made the outlay would be reimbursed, subject to the approval of a surveyor, as to the manner in which the ' track was made. Accordingly the contract was taken, the track is completed, and the workmen want paymenty but the money is not forthcoming, and the present defendant is sued because he formed one of the deputationto his Honor and subsequently took a leading part iv forwarding the work. The plaintiff was non-suited becausehe was not the person to whom the contract waslet, and because the track had not yet been- passed by a surveyor,, as provided for in the bond. :
