The declaration of thepollfor the Paroa district was made yesterday at noon, by the Returning Officer, Mr H. H. Wolters, as follows : —
The Returning Officer declared Mr Peter Dungan and Mr A. R. Guinness duly elected as members to serve in the Provincial Council of Westland.
Mr Dungan said that he had attended the declaration of the poll that day to return his thanks to those gentlemen who had supported, him. He felt' deeply gratified with the result, and his past conduct was a sufficient guarantee that he would do his best for the future. The contest had been carried on in a fair open manner between the rival candidates. Not one single unkind feeling had been evoked amongst them. He heartily thanked all who had recorded their votes for him. Mr Guinness said he felt much gratified with the honor of being elected second on the poll to Mr Dungan, as an immense amount of influence had been brought to bear on account of his not being a local man. He was also opposed by the largest firm in the district, and everything was done to keep him out. He considered it a very healthy sign that 440 voters took part in this contest. Now he was elected he would again Bay that he should carry out all the promises he had made, so that when he again came before them for election he should have good grounds for asking their support, and to occupy the same honorable position he now did, for which he again thanked them. Mr Barnett said he had much pleasure in thanking those gentlemen who had honored him with their votes. He attributed his defeat entirely through another local candidate being brought forward, and likewise being' opposed by some of the same firm, who had used all their influence to secure his defeat. He should return to his private duties satisfied he had done some good by causing parties to take an interest in the affairs of the Province. He had much pleasure in again thanking his supporters, and moved the usual vote of thanks to the Returning Officer, which Mr Guinness seconded, and it was carried unanimously.* Mr Campbell was unavoidably absent.
