BAZAINE'S PRISON.

[OTAOO TIMES.] The European telegrams brought by the Claud Hamilton cnrtly announce that "Marshal Bazaine goes to St. Marguerite, one of the Lerin group, in the .Mediterranean." From this it is to be inferred that his recommendation to mercy by the Judges of the Tribunal by which he was tried, has resulted in his sentence of death being commuted into one of imprisoftmept for life. The island which is to be his prison forms, with a smaller one named St. Honorat, and a few rocks, the Lerin group. It i 3 2k miles in length, by f-mile in breadth, and is distant 1\ miles from the mainland at Cannes. The two principal islands are defended by a fort and several batteries, ; and' besides the garrison the inhabitants consist of a few fishing families only. Rabbits and partridges abound on them, and St. Marguerite is well wooded. The castJe of St.' Marguerite has long been used as a State prison, and is famous in history as having been at one time the place where the mysterious Man of the Iron Mask wa3 confined. Tbe reflection is hardly a consolin-j one for Marshal Bazaine, though the combination of ideas is likely to furnish abundant material for the pens of French journalists and romancers. In his island prison, within sight of the spot where Napolenn I. landed on his return from Elba, Bazaine will have ample food for reflection if death do nob soon overtake him, and of this, owing to the state of his health, there appears to be considerable probability.
