The whole of the returns of the Provincial Council elections are now in and, an idea can be formed of the quality of the new Council. On the whole it may be said to be an improvement, but it is singular that bo few, old members have been re-elected.. > Out of the fifteen members elected there are only four who have held seats in the County Council — Messrs Laliman, White, Dungan-, and Cuming. The, : Arahura District has' throivn over its old representative, Mr Barff, who : certainly had mariy r strong claims to the support '"'bf' the' constituency. Although never what might be. .called a "popular" man, no member of the County Council worked harder for his constituents than Mr Barff has always done, and we : are surprised arid sorry that he has not been re^ turned. Mr John White heads the poll at Hokitika,,a position he : fully deserves, and his colleagues, Messrs'Tabart and Todd, will, no doubt, be ; good useful members. Mr Tabart, we think, is no stranger; to public life, and will bring considerable experience to the aid of the Council..; The Paroa electors have stuck Well to their dlcT member, Mr Durigan,; And given him as a companion Mr A. R.
