ALL-ENGLAND V. VICTORIA.
In reference to the All-England match ■with Victoria,, a» allusion to . former matches between the mother country and the same Colony will notba inappropriate. In' the Brat match with Stephenson's Eleven, commenced on JN;ew Year's Day, 1862, the'eighteen representatiVes of Victoria were beaten in one innings, Jhe Enel'-ahraeri making 305, of which CafFyn contributed 72, and the Victorians 118 in their first, and 92 in their second innings. In the first match with Partfs eleven, begun on New. Year's Day, 1864, the . Englishmen were opposed by 22 Victoriens. The visitors won with six wickets to spare. The scores were— Twenty-two, fir3t innings, 146 ; second innings, 143. Eleven— First innings 176 ; second innings, 106 with 4 wickets down. The Victorian cricketers have made great strides in the last nine years. The present Eighteen form incomparably the • best te^m which that colony has ever metthefoe. ■ , , , With respect to the last match the Argus remarks :— " The cricket match which has been the topic of public conversation and the theme of almost universal interest for some days past, has terminated in an unexpected and a brilliant victory for the Victorian Eighteen. But while offering them our cordial congratulations upon the triumph they have achieved, it would be unjust to their gallant opponents, our English visitors, ,'to omit to remind the successful players, that,; in all such contests, chance and luck are co-efficients with special aptitude and skillj and that the All-England Eleven, fresh from a voyage halfway round the globe, ahd translated in six weeks from the mid-winter of a northern to the mid-' ' summer: of a southern clime, entered upon the match at a great disadvantage. Before they leave Australia, it vk not at all improbable, that they will be able to show r that the reputation which they have acquired in.the mother country has- been -a worthily won, and is capable of being y effectuallyivindicated upon colonial cricket < fields.
