NEW YEAR'S RACE MEETING.

Year's Day was duly held on Thursday^ and the town: was in consequence lefc empty' of inhabitants during the greater.part of the day. Altbou£[h:th'e- visitors were of course not so numerous as is the case 'at the annual races, .there .was nevertheless, a very fair attendance; and the. meeting was as successful as could bo anticipated. Mr W. /Woolfe acted: as^ Clerk ; of the Course.. , ' . The first race upon the, card was the Trial Stakes of 20 soys, 1^ miles ; ; open to all horses ;■• weight, for age j, entrance, 2 soys. For this race there were three entries only, namely, Mpzzel, Harlequin, and Lacenfeed, all the horses being the" property of Mr Graham. The two former only started, and Mr Graham declared to win with Mozzel. ' The next race advertised was the Distance Handicap" Trotting Race, of 15 soys ; 3 miles ; entrance, 1 soy ; minimum, weight, list. For this there were six entries, Ranger, who proved the winner, being admitted by consent. .The result was as follows :— Mr Marshall's Rangeiy scratch (Owner) 1 Mr O'M alley's Dolly, 150 yards ! start • ... ... . .... . .... 2 1 Mr 'Young's o enhv; 50 yards ! ! start ... r ; ;.' -■' " ; ;:; ;: ... 3 This event having been decided,: was succeeded by the. Handicap, pf ' 50 soys ; If miles ; 'nominations, .2.80V3 ; acceptances 2 soys. r Four, ..starred, : and , the race terminating in favor, of Sandy, the old horse who recently distinguished ; himself at the Ahaura and: rTotara Races, and who is reported' by our' correspondent to be as-' good 'at the plough "as he 'is' on the course. o ' The following' was the* 1 order of arrival : — Mr Cochrane's eh g Sandy, aged ■•• ! •7st4lb(Cochrane) / ;;. ; ..^1 Mr Graham's eh m Lacenfeed (Blyth) ..;■•■• ... /.;. 2 : Mr Richardson's br g Wide- : awake (Richardson) 3 -Mr Vallance'sbg Jasper, aged... 0 Following this was the Hurdle Race, of 15 soys ; 1 mile, heati 1 soy; , ' minimum weigh fc, 9st, for which three : horsds only started, namely, Mountaineer, Da vie, and Faraday, the race resulting in the victory of Mountaineer. This was succeeded by the Handicap Race, of 30 soys ; 1^ miles ; nominations, S'spjss-^'which was won by'Lacenfeed;, thej ofder being as follows:— .
