Lioness, tug steamer.

The Murray took her departure early yesterday morning for Hokitika, and on the same tide the Titan arrived, with an accession to the number of excursionists who had arrived on the previous evening by the Lioness. There were thus three tug steamers in the port, and these only, but, clad in bunting as thpy were, in celebration of the double holiday, they looked unusually imposing. . The French barque Tacite, after a long passage of 130 day? from Bordeaux to New Caledonia, had just about reached her destination when she went ashore on the Mato Bass Reef, and there became a total wreck. She had a cargo of general merchandise on board. The cause of the disaster was want of wind, together with a current setting iv on the land. Although the ship sank in deep water, all hands were saved. The prospectus of the Union Steamship Company, with a capital of L 250.000 in LlO Bhares, has been issued. The objects of the company wM be to establish a line of steamers between Otago aud the principal Northern ports, and also to provide for taking up the coastal trade of the intermediate ports. The shares will principally be allotted in Canterbury and Otago, and Mr H. P. Murray- Aynsley and Mr George Gould have been appointed on the provisional directory.
