NELSON PROVINCIAL ELECTIONS.

AHAURA, The final result of the voting tor two members to represent the Grey Valley in the Provincial Council of Nelson was declared at the Court House, Ahauta, at noon ou Friday, 21st inst., by theßeMiming Officer, C Whitefoord, Esq. The returns were as follows : — F. Guinness ... 218 J. Corbett 177 D. J. M'Kenna , 141 J. D. Pinkerton 13ft R. Grey ... 43 Mr Guinnes3 being the only one of the candidates present, briefly addressed the electors, Hianking them for the position in which they had placed him at the head of the poll, and promising that he would continue his efforts for rhe good of the whole district. The interest the electors had, taken in the election, and the numbers who had recorded their. -votes,-, would strengthen the hands of the representatives,, for it could ; not now be said that the Gold-fields members did not represent constituencies. He would conclude by reternins? the thanks of the electors to Mr Whttefoord for the admirable arrangements he had made, and for the impartial manner in which he had conducted the election. ~ / Mr Whitefoord, in acknowledging the compliment, said he was pleased to see that the electors had taken such an interest in the contest, because it was an indication of the presence of a- healthy ooliticai feeling. The number of vojejj polled was very much in excess of thqse. it any previous election in .the Valley, and the number of .^individuals who exercised the franchise was greater than at first sight appeared. This was shown by the large number of "plumpers" vi yen for certain of the candidates. He intended to make an analysis of the voting, which, when completed, he would place at th« disposal of the represents? tives of the Press for general information. Be trusted that every future election would be carried on as fairly and with the same amount of good feeling on the part of the candidates and their supporters as the one just concluded. The proceedings I then terminated. y ifEISON". ; , j Qn Monday, the 17, th, the Returning j Officer, Mr Broad, in declaring the poll | for the City, said that hefore doing bo he wished to make one remark^ that was, that twQ electors, who voted at the Oddfellows' Hall thought fit to tear the number off their ballot papers, under the impression it would not be known for whom, they voted, thereby, under the 59th sec? •tion of .the Electoral Act, making their Votes nu.ll and void. He would now proceed tq declare the poll :-rrW. R0ut,. 285$ A. Pitt, 282; A. Greenfield, 264; A. Adams, 301 ; H, A. iieveatam, 186 ; Jf

R. Hooper, 132; R. Burn, 82. H. therefore declared the first four gentlen«a duly elected. WAIMEA SOUTH AND MOTtfEKA. Messrs Shephard and Baigent and Parleer and Tarrarit have been returned for Waime- South and Motneka respectively. Mr Shephard and Mr Exigent were the former members. At Motneka Mr Macmahon wras again a candidate, but r-at> bee» sneceeded by his fviend Mr Parker, who was himself a member of the Cinv.icil some time ago, and who occupies in the Assembly the seat from which Sir David Monro was ousted. At the WaimeaS»nth nomination Mr Shnphard said :— With regard to the Superintendent it should be remembered that it was quite possible to have a man of too much energy. It was far easier to push on one who needed such an incentive to action than to stop a mad- i man on horseback. Before sitting down I he wished to say a word or two on a personal matter. It had come to his ears that some scoundrel — for scoundrel he must be who would make such a lying statement — had been endeavoring to imperil his election by industriously circulating the report that he (Mr Shephard) was pledged to support Mr O'Conor. This was simply untrue, for he had had no part with him, had declined to confer with him, and certainly would not support him. (Thia statement was received with loud cheera, -which increased when, in reply to a question from an elector, whether he would vote for Mr Curtis, Mr Shephard replied, " I shall.") WAIMEA BAST. The following was the result of the poll in this district : — Richmond. Stoke. Total. Barnicoafc ... 56 23 70 Kelliog ... 5S 3 61 Harley ... 20 41 61 The Returning Officer will give the casting vote when officially declaring the poll, on a day yet to be appointed. At the nomination,. Mr Harley said— He wished to say most positively that he was a warm supporter of Mr Onrtis against Mr O'Conor, whom he looked upon as a mere adventurer. He did not mean to say that Mr Curtis was all he wished for, but he was by far the better of the tvo. He had served them faithfully, and was certainly an able man, but he had been working with two fifty-sixes tied on to his heels, having had to deal with a lot of old women in the Council. He was glad there was to be a change in the Executive, and at the same time was glad that Mr Greenfield had not been turned out, for he was a most useful man, but he should like to see a clear sweep of the rest of the Council. — Mr Kelling, in r»ply to a qnestion, said he did not know which candidate for the Snoerintendency he would vote for, not having read their speeches ; and his answer is understood to have imperilled his election.
