THE LYELL REEFS.

[brom our own correspondent.] During the last fortnight, the Lvell township has presented quite a holiday aspect... -What : .with ,the : _..monthyi- i Court : aud the approaching T elecupn — to say nothing of the Little * Wonder crushing— to use a common expression, things are looking up, or perhapait would not be but of place to say that the consumption of Hennessy is .increasing.. The. tn;o expressions are, strange' to say, synnho'mbus. There is no doubt something seductive ;in . politics, especially wheu^discussed over a g'ass of Hennessy, and accompanied by a Havana. I heard an elector assert that if you set him down to a bottle of battie-axa a bundle of cigars, he could discourse politics till— well, till the bottle was empty, and I believe him. We have now four candidates in the field, and all of them good and true men "in their own. opinions, if not in those of the electors. Messrs M'Lean and : M'Gregor are decidedly the favorites at present, and deBerve to be, for either of these gentlemen would-do us honor. Mr O'Uonor has paid us a passing visit, and favored us with his .opinions on things in general, and the Superintendent's failingS in particular.: There must be something wron^ with the Nelson people, for do not Messrs O'Cohor and Ivess agree that they all want executing, or something worse ? If they are such a bad lot, why do Messrs O'Conor and Ivess desire so much to be, amongst them, ? Do birds of a feather, &c? I should say evil communications corrupt good manners, and good chapters also, and would be sorry to see Messrs Joseph and Eugene in bad company. ' , The Maruia Company will commence crushing at the Little Wonder machine on Monday next. Their stone will yield something like 6qz or 7oz to the ton. The Monte Christo are also making preparations to crush. '„ The washing up at the Little j Wonder machine has just been- completed, and it is reported that the stone will pay hand somely. I think about 4oz to the ton will be pretty near the mark. At present the result has not yet been made publicly known. The Excelsior claim is, of course, idle, so also is the Alpine, so far as I am aware. Both companies were sued here at the last Court day. The Excelsior Company has filed its schedule, much to the disgust of the unfortunate wages men, some of whom are creditors to the extent 0f.L60 and L7O each for wages alone. Most of the other claims on the'hill are at a stand still, and will remain so till after Christmas. . ;. Maloney's prospecting claim has! just, completed a crushing at the Little Wonder machine. The result is alluded to above.
