GREY LITERARY SOCIETY.

A meeting of! the Coriimittee . of : ihe ; Grey Literary Society, as recently reorganised, was held at. the Union Hotel on Wednesday evening, when_the following report from the Secretary, as to the progress of the. Society during the past month, was read and approved of : —

"1. The Society numbers, up to the Ist instant, 132 members, being 124 yearly and half yearly subscribers, and 8 life members ; there is every reason to assume that, before the expiration of the current month, that number will be increased to 200.

"2. At the beginning of the past month the Society purchased and took possession of the property of the Greymouth Literary Association, consisting of over 500 volumes of valuable and well-bound works of every branch of literature, besides an extensive collection of periodicals and files of newspapers. Also, a book called * Great Lone Land' has been purchased, and a donation, viz., 'JStauntoD's Chess-book/ has been received. The list of papers and periodicals has been revised, and the Society will, by the first mail leaving England after the Ist January next, receive papers suitable for every class of subscribers, including French and Gerriian papers. It may here be mentioned that, if the funds, would permit it, a small assortment of books might be imported every quarter, as there can be no doubt that this would, stimulate the interest of the public in the library.

" 3. It has been decided to postpone the Society's Exhibition of Fine' Artsland Curiosities till next March, in order to avoici clashing with the Hokitika Exhibition, in consideration of which the gentle-, men connected with the latter have promised their cordial support to the Exhibition of the Society, in the meantime/ it is understood that the members, of the Committee are, ex diHcio, ' members 6f the local Committee for the Hokitika Exhibition, and that such support will be given

to the enterprise of the sister town as will ensure its hearty co-operation at a future occasion.

"4. The sub-committee for entertainments in aid of the funds of the Society has completed arrangements for an enter-, tairimerit, which will shortly take place, and cannot fail to be a success.

"5 The Furnishing Committee have entered into, arrangements to fit-up the new room in the Masonic Hall in the most suitable and economical manner.

"6. For the purposes, of the Society the ground floor of the Masonic Hall has been .rented ; , the , Society ; must , ba congratulated bh J havirig secured premises so suitable to itsreguirements, the Masonic: Hall ! room being' : bbtK r centrally' isituated and of easy access to the. public, circuiristarices which it is "expected will, .add greatly to the chances .of success of , the Society.
