MARSDEN.
[FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] r ; :; ■; ■ ! Nbvember.o. The Hibernian Race Company expect to be ;able ; to commence' sluicihgiri the course of a fortnight. They have a lease! of two acres of ground near to Donegal Terrace, No Name; arid they are sanguineof it paying very well. This no more than they richlydeserve;after ; the laborious undertaking which they have now brought to a termination. It is getting on "for four .years since they commenced cutting their race, which must. prove a great ac: quisition'to the district [generally,, and'ifr is- to be: hoped that they will reap a good reward for their enterprise— in fact, from the report .of , the ground that their/Water: commands, . they cannot. help doing! so. The race terminates on Donegal Terrace for the present, but will ultimately be continued to Petersburg, where therejis a flat that is known to contain paying gold. At the time of the rush there, about four or five years, since there were two shafts put down about 7Oft, : and layers of wash were gone through. The ground, however, was ultimately abandoned because of the labor that was required to open it, and likewise through there not being sufficient w.ater available, to work it/ Hence the primary cause of the present race being .commenced, so that there larfi fair.p rospects rfbr. this enterprising 'company to reap! a substantial reward°which they' have so deservedly earned for themselves. , . .. .......... ._..,..,,..-.,,,. ..,.-,,,,.-..
The boisterous weather during the last few days has proved Very acceptable gene-, rally, as it has been the means of supplying water to the sluicers who were' idle, for nearly a fortnight for the want of it;' ' As the County is; shortly to be transformed, into a. Province,, and the number of 'members increased,, it is believed i that' two members will be allotted to theParoa district, which extends over a large > area of country. The population of the Paroa is. so widely scattered, and their interests and'requirements so diversified, that two members at least should be allotted, which no doubt will, be done. 'There is -301116 talk aboutV getting up some sports at Christmas, andjow'is the - time for action if that 'is intended to be done.' A committee ' might be formed to collect subscriptions, Iprepareja program me, and' make suitable arrangement?. . ;Many men prefer enjoying themselves at home, and it 'will certainly conduce; to^the interest of the Marsdenites to of&rsisuch inducements ; in the : shape of sports that • one and all will be, anxious to take part lin^thetn. v>' ; ■■■■< : 'K.r:-\l''. i J^JAT ; The Greymouth Cricket Club sent a challenge to Marsden to play a matchV , A, meeting will be called of those amateurs 'who are known in the district to-, consider" it. The general feeling, however, is; that, it will have' to ; be- postponed forfanbther 0 year, as there is no suitable ground at present for practising that noble game. ' : - A grand billiard match" is to take place'" .on ; Friday eveniug* at Marsderi between) two amateurs-rMessrs Kirwin; and Wigmore—s.oo up, ( for, Lloo a side. Great interest is taken in the affair, as both are dons, and the result will be the champion- -| ship of the district.
