THE LATE REV. R. GASKIN.
The Collingwood correspondent of the "Nelson Examiner," writing of the discovery of the remains of the Rev. Mr Gaskin, says.: — ■ ■•■ After a submergence of exactly three weeks (even to the hour), the remains of the deceased Mr Gaskin were, at a little after sunset on, the 15th, discovered: by Dr Dakers drifting past the Post Office on the incoming tide. That gentleman having procured assistance, the body was brought to the ahore under the Magistrate's Court, and conveyed to a temporary place of deposit in the Port. With. the exception of the exposed portions, the body was in a state of remarkable preservation after such a length of time. There is no doubt now that Mr Gaakin was drowned in the Aorere, not in the Rua-Tanewa, as first surmised — most probably in the deep hole immediately at the end of the point on ' which Collingwood is built-— within hail of the people, who knew nothing of what was passing so near. If drowned at this spot, he was certainly some distance from the proper course. The body most likely became caught in a snag, and hence the lateness of its rising to the surface. The watchchain was still attached to the waistcoat, but the watch was torn off. In his pockets were found a few ordinary trifles, a portmonnaie, and the last sermon written and preached; by the reverend gentleman in Collingwood and Pakawau, from John c iii., v. 3. The inquest was held this afternoon, before H. W, Turnell, Esq., and a jury, of which Mr Higgin was foreman. No circumstance of importance was elicited from the various witnesses beyond the details given before and those above. As showing the risss to life in districts like this, I may mention that, out of nineteen adult males interred in our little cemetery, only four have died natural deaths. The remaining fifteen have died from accident* of various sorts. The Rev. Mr Gaskin adds another to the melancholy list,
