THE Gren River Argus PUBLISHED DAILY. TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 1871.

Without doubt the decision arrived at by the House of Representatives last week to continue the gold duty at two shillings and sixpence an ounce will give great dissatisfaction in mining communities, and the representatives of the Gold Fields who supported it are sure to be taken to task for their temerity. It appears that Mr Harrison and Mr Tribe were among this number, and the Hokitika and Ross journals have taken the opportunity of holding them up as traitors to the mining interest. We will leave the Ro s journal to settle its dispute with its own member, and notice the remarks of our Hokitika contemporary. Of course, it was understood that the opportunity could not be allowed to phss when our contemporary thought it had caught the member for the Grey Valley tripping ; , but we are astonished at the feebleness of the arguments used, and the ignorance displayed of Mr Harrison's previous conduct on this game question. Now, it must not -be understood that we are defending that conduct; or arguing in support of the maintenance of the present tax ; what we simply wish to point out is the unjust interpretation which hats been given to the public of our representative's conduct on this question. Our contemporary says ; — " Mr Harrison's opposition is very easy to understand. The abolition or reduction of the gold duty would materially interfere with the pet scheme which he has for the moment in hand. Without the revenue received from the miners, the local bodies which he is desirous of creating, would have no means wherewith to work, and all his labor in his latest device would have been thrown away. The member for the Grey Valley was not willing to have the ground cut away from under him, so he sacrificed the miners while apparently advocating their interests." :
